Epilogue
Ten years later...
Samuel stared out into the garden. His mother was out there near the fountain. Temperance chased their twin daughters and son around the fountain, while Samuelâs mother smiled at their antics. Honor Caitriona and Patience Sorcha had their motherâs dark hair and silver-colored eyes, and their son was a mini replica of him. They twins were born a year after they decided to have a real marriage.
No more children had been born to them for three years after the twins came into their lives. Samuel had accepted that the twins would be his only children. He found it ironic that everyone had been so concerned he had a son to pass his title to, and heâd been blessed with two daughters. He adored Honor and Patience.
But then, by some sort of miracle, Temperance had become pregnant again before the twinsâ fourth birthday. When his son had been born, heâd cried. Not because he had been hoping for a son, but because his heart was bursting with love. Why had he ever believed he shouldnât have this? His family was the greatest gift heâd ever been given, and he would lay down his life to keep them.
They named their son Niall Daniel after the two most important men in Samuelâs life.
After the tumultuous start to Samuelâs life it seemed fitting that he was back where he belonged with a wife he adored beyond all reason, and children that filled his heart to near bursting with love. He didnât believe in fairy tales or happy endings, but fate had given him a version of one.
âSamuel,â his mother called to him. âCome join us.â
He shook his head. Heâd hug and kiss them all later. For now, this was all he wanted. To bask in his joy and their laughter.
His mother chuckled, but nodded at him. She understood more than most what they had lost. The villagers had accepted him back into their lives, and he would do his best to ensure they never had cause to persecute his family again.
So far his children showed no signs they had any of the three gifts, but he and Temperance were ever vigilant. Should the children have one of the gifts they would need to be counseled on their usage. He would not lose his children to the bigotry heâd lost his father and aunts to.
The children swarmed his mother and hugged her. Temperance slipped away from them and came to his side. Samuel pulled her into his arms and kissed her lips. A quick affectionate kiss, one that had come naturally for him to give her, even in the presence of his family. âI love you,â he whispered into her ear.
âAnd I love you,â she said. Her smile was bright, and her happiness glowed around her.
Life was a journey of unexpected joy and hardships. Both Samuel and Temperance had their fair share, but at least now they had each other to see them through it. She leaned her head on his shoulder, and he held her close to him.
